In May 2010, Software Test Professionals presented to the community the Software Test Luminary Award. It was the association's intent to present an award that recognizes software testing and quality excellence and professionalism. You – the community – voted on who exemplified the award criteria.
Initially, the community narrowed down the process to three very deserving nominees: James Bach, Cem Kaner and Gerald Weinberg. All three nominees not only inspire others in the testing profession but have also made a significant impact by improving software testing processes and methodologies. After the nominees were chosen, the community voted for the finalist. The results have been tabulated and you have chosen Gerald M. Weinberg as the Software Test Luminary Award Recipient.
Mr. Weinberg truly exemplifies an industry luminary. He is a programmer who has authored or co-authored several hundred articles and more than 30 books. His works have addressed operating systems and programming languages, as well as all phases of the software development life-cycle, including defining problems and requirements, analysis and design, testing and measurement, as well as management. As proven by the community's choice of award recipient, his many contributions have been impactful and inspiring to many in the industry.
Learning that he was chosen for the award, Jerry stated "I'm honored to be chosen for this award, though it's not really for me. It's for all those people whose actions taught me the lessons I have passed on in their stead. It's also for all those people who have put those lessons to work in their efforts to build and test high quality software."
He added, "Up until now, I never thought of myself as a luminary. (Here in New Mexico, we call those paper-bagged Christmas candles luminarias-or farolitas in Santa Fe, where everything has to be different). But I now see that the luminary label fits, because that's what I try to do – cast light on the work of our ‘ancestors' and light the way for others who follow."
Jerry will be honored with the award on the conference general session stage and commented, "I'm especially pleased that I've been invited to the STP Conference in Las Vegas this October. I am looking forward to interacting with many of the very people whom I represent in accepting this award. I hope to see you there and share some light with you."
We encourage you to learn more about Mr. Weinberg by reading his biography, listening to a recent podcast interview or by attending the Software Test Professionals Conference & Expo 2010 (October 19-21). At the conference, you can meet and talk with Mr. Weinberg who will personally sign copies of his books.
In conclusion, a warm thank you goes out to the community for helping us identify Mr. Gerald M. Weinberg as the Software Test Professionals first annual Luminary Award recipient.
