Most robust applications, whether desktop- or Web-based, allow multiple users to log into the system and perform tasks concurrently. Many test plans account for the users’ individual actions or the users’ massed actions (in the case of performance tests).

When it comes time for you to write a job ad to fill a lower rung position in your quality assurance department, you might be tempted to merely copy the same old, same old boilerplate from other job postings and put this out there:

When your team sits down at a project kickoff, look around the table and see who determines your software’s purposes and workflows. You will probably see a project manager, some developers, some quality assurance people, probably a sales oriented client-facing person with some faddish title, and perhaps a business analyst if your organization is big enough. Who is missing from this equation? The end user.

In western movies, whenever a suspicious stranger blows into the bootstrapping town of good folk, the local sheriff makes a point to interact with the stranger early. “We’re a law-abiding people,” the sheriff says, instructing the stranger on the town rules and his enthusiasm for law enforcement. The stock makes for interesting cinema, my fellow quality assurance sheriffs, and it also makes for a good idea in your workplace; educate your new co-workers during their orientation process with a speech about what quality means to your organization.

The Limitations of Automated LinkCheckers

Automation
Web
User
If you’re planning to test a content-rich website that includes numerous pages, images, and links between them, you might consider using an automated link checking tool. An automated link checker, such as Xenu LinkSleuth or Fast Link Checker, spiders your website starting, typically, from the home page and follows all links on your website to ensure that they return something other than web errors. An automated link checker probably will also check references to JavaScript, Custom Style Sheet, image, and other files your web pages reference. The link checker then provides a report that includes the names of pages, the links on the pages, whether the link successfully resolved, and perhaps more robust reporting options and details.
