Over the past two years, the economy has taken various tumbles and turns, and companies are doing radical things with their IT departments. Outsourcing, offshoring, and layoffs are throwing good, senior testers, back into the interview process. If a tester has had little experience with interviewing, it can be a difficult transition.

Why we really need to do performance testing....

Tuesday July 20th 2010 5pm Rated 2 4 Comments Best Practices Performance
Okay, there are probably lots of reasons why people feel that they need performance testing done on an application - complaints from users or customers, wanting to baseline the app at inception, because they read somewhere that they should, the monetized value of error avoidance.... I'm sure there are other reasons. But I think there is a much simpler reason, read on and find out what it is....

Ditch the Requirements - Focus on the Customer Instead

Quality can be defined as meeting the customers' needs. Juran posted this definition in 1988, defining quality as "fitness for use". Testers like this definition as it gives them a "north star" to guide their actions and it reinforces a role that most testers relish, that of customer advocate. However Crosby's older definition of quality as "conformance to requirements" still holds strong sway, and many test processes are guided by test cases correlated directly to requirements.

Let's Embrace the Right Practices

I can't help it. I feel compelled to respond to the article written in STP entitled "A Good-Bye To ‘Best’ Practices". I love that someone is putting this issue on the table but I respectfully disagree with the author. We as the community of testing professionals needs to address the issue of "best practices" with a response that is something more erudite than ".... I've never figured out what that means therefore there probably aren't any...." Not only is this unprofessional, it's also inaccurate. Let's consider the question from a different perspective....

In these days of web based computing, it is possible that the computer (server) may be simultaneously serving thousands of clients with thousands of processes in execution. In such a scenario, it is possible that the CPU may enter into a dead-lock situation.

Security Tools Must Support An Existing Process Not Define a New One

Trying to introduce Security Testing into your software process can be tricky, just like teaching an old dog new tricks. A good first step would be to introduce a great security tool into an existing process. For example, introduce static source code analysis by adding it to the end of your automated build process. The initial ramp up cost is low, the change in process churn is low, but the value can be very high.

When I began working on a data migration project last year, I did not have much idea as to what it could entail. I did not have much experience with data migration apart from having some theoretical knowledge of what one should consider for testing such a project scope.

Tester: Not Just a Role Within Itself

Thursday October 20th 2011 1pm Rated 8 1 Comment Management Testing Best Practices
Most organizations wish for a quality product but paradoxically, very few give importance to testing. Instead they prefer fixing bugs as they appear in production. The general idea of other organizations is that quality of the application lies in the hands of the testers and it is the testers sole responsibility to deliver it "bug free".

The Shift, From Stereotypical to Effective Tester

Thursday November 3rd 2011 8am Rated 4 1 Comment Process Best Practices
A stereotypical description of an application tester’s role is usually about being given specifications, reporting bugs, verifying and closing bugs. This stereotypical tester will have a part to play in a testing organization, but will always be considered an outsider to the project and will not have much impact on the project lifecycle.

- The Technology Behind Static Code Analysis for Identifying Concurrency Defects Most developers would agree that consumers of software today continually demand more from their applications. Because of its pace of evolution to date, the world now anticipates a seemingly endless expansion of capabilities from their software, regardless of where that software is applied. For the last 40 years of computing, Moore’s Law has held true, with the number of transistors available in an integrated circuit doubling approximately every two years.
