Tuesday January 3rd 2012 10am Rated 13 6 Comments Career
Performance testers today face a challenge -- they must find ever-increasing work product that provides tangible results and meaningful value to the projects they serve. In response to this challenge, testers are turning to industry certifications or formal school training to help improve their skills. This does not always pay off in the end, especially with increased criticism around tester certifications undermining the testing discipline. This article outlines alternatives to getting certifications in order to make the next step, as there are proven ways to learn that don’t require an enormous outlay of money or time. This view is not anti-certification, but rather pro-mentoring and self-study/self-challenge. The tips provided offer a guide to a learning path within the discipline and are shared from the perspective of an independent tester who has shaped his own career around continuously growing and learning.

It is not a job requirement, but when getting hired as a software tester your creativeness will be assessed either through some interview questions or in a practical task. The funny thing is that employers should be careful what they wish for as an overly creative tester can sometimes be less productive at finding those tricky bugs.

I should have known better than to “Test the Tester”!

Thursday April 8th 2010 7am Rated 0 0 Comments Management Automation Metrics Process Software Testing Career Tools

Wow! This community has really opened my eyes to a Tester’s attention to details. No one response hit on the two “bugs” I implanted into the survey, but a number of you hit on the right questions, and many of you found or “created” your own bugs. There may have been a bit of “over analysis” on a number of the questions but some of the findings were well thought out. Thank you for the great response to the survey!
